Bayelsa State has set the tone for a transformative 2025 by taking bold steps toward empowering its youth through cutting-edge agricultural innovation. On January 8, 2025, 103 young Bayelsans commenced a three-month intensive training in soilless agriculture and greenhouse farming at Awowo, Ogun State. This groundbreaking initiative is part of the Enterprise for Youth in Agriculture (EYIA) program, sponsored by Mastercard Foundation and facilitated by the Bayelsa State Government.

The EYIA program is designed to equip participants with advanced skills in modern farming techniques, particularly in greenhouse farming and soilless agriculture. This innovative approach ensures greater crop yields, minimal environmental impact, and sustainable agricultural practices, paving the way for participants to become successful agricultural entrepreneurs.

Hon. Alfred Kemepado, Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development, highlighted the program as a crucial element of Governor Douye Diri’s ASSURED Prosperity agenda, which emphasizes sustainable development through youth empowerment. Speaking at the event, Mr. Kemepado described the training as “rigorous, hands-on, and transformative,” aimed at reducing dependency on imported food, fostering economic growth, and promoting self-reliance among Bayelsa’s youth.

Reflecting on the success of the previous cohort, where 77 participants excelled in the program, Mr. Kemepado expressed confidence in the new trainees. He urged them to embrace focus, discipline, and hard work, stating, “This is your opportunity to make a difference—not just for yourselves, but for your communities and the state as a whole.”

The program aligns with Bayelsa’s broader vision of empowering its youth to become innovators, job creators, and contributors to the state’s agricultural sector. By prioritizing sustainable and modern farming techniques, the state is taking a firm stand against unemployment, food insecurity, and economic stagnation.

Bayelsa State remains committed to fostering a brighter, self-reliant future where young people lead the way in driving innovation and economic prosperity. The EYIA program is yet another testament to the government’s dedication to empowering its youth and securing a sustainable future for all.

Together, Bayelsa is building a future of innovation, prosperity, and self-sufficiency!
